Dr. Gobinda Prasad Samantais currently a Director and Member of Faculty at Reserve Bank Staff College (RBSC), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Chennai. He joined RBI in 1990 and held various positions in RBI including the faculty assignment at RBSC since 2009. In a career of about 25 years as a central bank professional, he has a three-year stint in academia. He worked with the School of Management at IIT Bombay for two years during 2004-2006 as an Associate Professor and the Centre for International Development, Harvard University, Cambridge, USA for one year starting Oct. 2006 as a Visiting Scholar.
Dr. Samanta is a Graduate in Statistics Honours from Calcutta University, an M.Stat (Master in Statistics) from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and a Ph.D. (in Economics) from the University of Mumbai. He pursued the Chevening Gurukul Leadership Programme at the King’s College London (KCL), UK. Further, he is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF).
Dr. Samanta has made considerable efforts in teaching/training and policy oriented research. He has adopted an interdisciplinary approach in his work and made contributions in multiple areas, viz., inflation, growth and monetary policy issues, economic modeling and forecasting, financial markets and risk modeling, bank mergers and efficiency, measurement of economic variables. Further, he taught full academic courses to Management/post-graduate and Ph.D. students, and for nearly seven years now he is in training field and engaged into capacity building and human resource development in RBI.
Dr. Samanta has made significant research contributions on several policy and developmental issues. He is a recipient of two national level awards, viz.,(i) V.K.R.V.Rao Prize in Social Science (Economics) for the year 2006 – the coveted prize awarded by ISEC, Bangalore in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research; and (ii) Mahalanobis Memorial Medal (National) for the year 2006 – the coveted bi-annual award given by The Indian Econometric Society (TIES) for his significant contribution in the field of “quantitative economics”. He won five Best Paper or Outstanding Paper Awards at various national and international conferences. Some of the prestigious scholarship/fellowships he received include (i) UK Government’s Chevening Gurukul Scholarship on ‘Leadership and Excellence’ for the year 2014; (ii) Golden Jubilee Scholarship by RBI (2006); (iii) a one-year Visiting Scholar at the Harvard University, USA (2006-07); (iv) Three Research Projects/Scholarships under ‘Research Initiatives” of National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (2001, 2004 & 2014); (v) Junior Research Fellowship by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (1989).
Dr. Samanta renders honorary services in several ways, such as being referee to reputed journals, panelist and member of advisory board to conferences, judge in debate competition, and so forth. He is on editorial advisory board of a few research journals.
